Les Dixon

Les Dixon

The start 1968-69 with Trevor Wilcox Guitar vocals Paul Mailfert Keyboards vocal and Les Dixon Bass making a decision to having a similar like in music to start a band, no name, also no Drummer. “A bit like the Beatles no Drummer”

The only drummer at the time was George Tet Fong and his percussive Coconuts, not necessarily what we were looking for. (but in hindsight we could have had our own Stewy Spears).

We eventually got the necessary equipment, and Trevors neighbor Neil Hunt used to play Drums with the Union Jack / Generation Neil, Tony Jaggers, Robbie Polson, and Danny Goodhugh (not sure on the spelling you know who I mean). After some discussion Neil agreed to play Drums. We were off still no name but played a couple of time at Methodist Church Hall, I can remember playing one night at the Yarrawick Hall.

Then Neil told us that love was more important, good choice his still happily married, but we were drummer less again. We play the Uralla Thunderbolt Centenary Community Hall gig with Gary Osborne,  Armidale Drummer who helped us out for the night.

We then approached Pat O’Brien who we found out played drums in the De La Sel marching band or such, we approached Pat and after an education on family discussion and Pat’s father speaking with some of our parents it was agreed that Pat could join the Band.

A name was now agreed on “Hot Frost”, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy  was bantered around for a while but it was mentioned that an American band already had that name, Hot Frost it was.

Shortly after Pat joined Paul informed us that we needed another Guitarist, and Andy Donnelly visited practice session in the Wilcox lounge room and became our lead Guitarist,

Our debut was at the Uralla Bowling Club (Dad was Secretary and arrange the gig) we all rocked up for the gig and then had to talk Andy for some time, into playing, as he didn’t want to play because  they served Alcohol, eventually sorting it out and a good debut, couple of other dances Youth Group and CWA Hall.

We played the 1970 Battle of Bands, Andy had to play football that day (Glen Innes I think) he was late, and had not arrived back, Steve was there with us and ready to go on if Andy didn’t make it (Steve had not  played with us before), with only minutes to go Andy made it, also informing us that he had chosen Football instead of music, he played the gig, with  Steve on the side line, but by the end of the night Steve had joined the band ready to replace replaced Andy, no discussion was had it was just assumed.

Andy played with us several more gigs but we now had 3 guitars for a couple of shows, Andy’s parents came down one weekend at a Church Hall in Armidale to watch the band and that was Andys last gig with us.

We then got to play down Tamworth (Pat’s Aunt was the Matron or such at Tamworth Hospital and arranged us to play the Graduation, Xmas party or such, Steve’s first solo with the band, great night we did play well.

Early 71 would have been around Easter, I had to leave would soon be leaving town for work, left town in June 71.. Trevor took on Bass.

I spoke to Steve today has said that he was talking to Paul and never played in the band with me, not correct, we played a few shows don’t how many it wasn’t a dozen but definitely a few as mentioned, I clearly remember the Tamworth gig and when Andy’s parents came to the show
